This is a follow up to the first blog in which I stated I would discuss how the mechanism of counterstrain works. It is an extremely complicated technique so I will try my best to break it down into understandable language.

The working hypothesis is that the fascia constricts in the body. (Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds literally everything in the body). Once the fascia constricts around an area it essentially traps lymphatic fluids. Lymphatic fluid is your waste system so you definitely do not want it trapped; you want your body excreting it. The trapped lymphatic fluids then set off an inflammatory response in the body and it is an ongoing loop that gets more complicated the more time that passes. This is why people feel they are “aging”. It is not aging; it is years of stagnant lymphatic fluid. One 80 year old client stated she felt a decade younger” with each counterstrain treatment and this is a very accurate description.
With counterstrain, the technique shortens the fascia and allows the trapped lymphatic fluid to exit the space. Often we will feel a pulse while the fluid is exiting. Think of when you fold a hose to stop the water … when you release it the water gushes out before returning to a normal flow. People will feel immediate relief as the tender point is no longer present. This will have systemic effects on the body as one system impacts another all over the body. It is not uncommon that knee pain improves when we treat the digestive system or headaches go away when we treat the shoulders, or plantar fasciitis resolves when we treat the back. The body truly is all connected and it is so rewarding to be able to treat the whole body and have clients feel like a new person when they leave.
